As part of the Hanukkah Fánk n’ Funk program-series, we will also celebrate Hanukkah in Kőszeg. The series of events will take place between 18-25 December, not only in Budapest, but also in rural towns. The Hanukkah candle will be lit in Szentendre, Miskolc and Debrecen, as well as in a small border town, Kőszeg.
The celebration of Hanukkah commemorates a heroic story that took place more than two thousand years ago: the Jews’ fight for freedom from Greek domination. The struggle ended in victory for the Maccabees, but what we call a miracle was yet to come. The Jews found in the recaptured sanctuary only enough pure oil for one day, which miraculously illuminated the Temple in Jerusalem for eight days. By the light of the candles placed in the hanukiah, we have celebrated these eight days of Hanukkah ever since.
On 19th of December the Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg in cooperation with the United Hungarian Israelite Congregation is orgainising a Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony in Jurisics Square, than Ernő Sebestyén violinist and his friends are giving a concert in the renovated Synagogue of Kőszeg.
Violinist Ernő Sebestyén, cellist György Éder and pianist Ferenc Bognár will perform Fanny Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D minor and Felix Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D minor.
So during the Hannukkah – at the darkest time of the year – the light grows, as each day one more candle flame gives us light.
You can buy ticket in person before the concert or by reservation via contact@archive.iask.hu.
We are looking forward to welcoming you and celebrate together.
