On 2nd May, the Institute of Advanced Studies will pay tribute to the life and work of Baron Philip Schey with a Memorial Day. As it is well known, the synagogue in Kőszeg was built with the support of Fülöp Schey, who went from being a retailer in Kőszeg to a major businessman in Vienna, and who also provided a substantial sum of money for the first kindergarten and poorhouse in Kőszeg. In recognition of his philanthropic activities, a street in Kőszeg was named after him. The street was renamed after the Second World War, but on 2nd May it will be given back its original name. After the event, our Institute will celebrate the rebuilding of the synagogue together with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. We are particularly pleased that the Day of Remembrance will be attended by the descendants of Philip Schey living abroad, members of the Schey-Ephrussi-de Waal family.
