The Future of Europe – in a Global Context – iASK Lecture Series 2020 Spring
O Brave New Europe! Shakespearean lessons for negotiating the contemporary European political atmosphere
Lecture by J.D. Mininger (Vice President For Academic Affairs – LCC International University, Lithuania)
This lecture unpacks the thesis that we live in an increasingly anxious European society, in which panic-stricken European citizens are equally and simultaneously torn between the complaint that there is too much oppressive authority and the grumbled objection that there is not enough protective authority. Examples from several of Shakespeare’s notable plots, characters, and themes will be presented as a framing window for defining and analyzing the situation, as well as offering preliminary insights into the ambiguities that seem to be both the cause and the effect of our anxieties about political power in Europe today.
