[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]The Institute of Advanced Studies K\u0151szeg (iASK) is founded at a time of great global uncertainty and growing interdependence. “We have entered a new age of uncertainty<\/em>” are the words of Elem\u00e9r Hankiss, who provided guidance for the Institute’s foundation. We have arrived at a crossroads and need to ask the best questions to find the best ways forward. We are continually surprised by climate change, regional political instability, financial crises, presidential elections and the overall spread of intolerance and violence. As Ron Atkin put it: A surprise is an answer to a question we did not ask!<\/em><\/p>\n

People stick to illusory or vanishing “certainties” because of a lack of alternatives. Traditional analytical frameworks and concepts do not provide satisfactory solutions to the present challenges. The world is more complex, and processes occur rapidly that are often contradictory. Traditional education does not prepare students for an uncertain future with increasing levels of threats. Personal and social safety, institutions and the material and natural world that surround us have become precarious. In this context, the role of science takes precedence, providing valid and useful prognosis and explanations for contemporary phenomena. This includes the responsible undertaking of scientific inquiry with relevant application to human societies.<\/p>\n

The task and responsibility of iASK is to help navigate through the complexities and uncertainties of this age, contributing to the formulation of answers to pressing issues that require more complex and interdisciplinary thinking.<\/p>\n

Some of the questions that need to be addressed include:[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text el_class=”highlighted-text-width-left-line”]Is economic growth sustainable? Can the biosphere be sustained? What is worth sustaining in our world? Is the general concept of “sustainability” sustainable?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Will there be enough water for all? Will continents be flooded by rising sea levels? Will drought destroy in other regions? What does this mean for humanity? Are we doomed to the scenario of resource wars? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What can be done to mitigate migration and its causes? How can we live together in more complex and diverse societies?<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text el_class=”highlighted-text-width-left-line”]Do we have a biological proclivity built into our DNA that might help us overcome obstacles by cooperating effectively? What binds us as a species together that can lead us forward: our genes, our culture, our conscience or our sense of danger?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

How deep do we need to dig into our histories to find the common denominator for different cultural heritages?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What should be done to understand and respect each other’s religion, habits and “culture”? Is this at all possible in the light of our current educational systems? If the answer is no, what needs to be done to move forward?\u00a0<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]We are sitting on unprecedented mountains of data and “information” that we create, but cannot digest or interpret contextually. Can we use this data meaningfully? Can we see the forest through the trees?<\/p>\n

What kinds of knowledge are available to us? What can science and art contribute? Is it possible to create a new balance between the left and the right cerebral hemispheres?<\/p>\n

According to Albert Einstein, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them<\/em>“. We need to take the initiative and be innovative. We should not be afraid of leaving the comfort zones of our thinking! We have accumulated the relevant knowledge we need, but working in isolation does not provide solutions.<\/p>\n

It is the mission of iASK to bring together a critical mass of intellectually open, courageous and knowledge-sharing practitioners – those that know that everything is at risk and that conventional research will simply not do, only creative and unusual combinations of ideas. We would like to serve, not only to know.
