A success story in K\u0151szeg: the Schey family<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The exhibition A success story in K\u0151szeg: the Schey family<\/em> will be opened at 3 pm on Sunday, August 28th<\/sup> at the newly renovated Synagogue in K\u0151szeg, V\u00e1rk\u00f6r 38. It is a part of the event series Week of Synagogues in K\u0151szeg<\/em>, organised by the Institute of Advanced Studies (iASK)<\/a>. The exhibition is dedicated to Philip Schey (1798-1881), a philanthropist from K\u0151szeg who became a banker for the Habsburgs, the first Jewish person from Hungary who was honoured by emperor Franz Joseph with the noble title: Philip Schey von Koromla. The Exhibition documents all his great work for K\u0151szeg: support of economic, welfare and religious institutions.<\/p>\n

The Past, Present and Future of Synagogues in Hungary<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ferenc Miszlivetz, General Director of iASK will open the exhibition at the beautiful 19th<\/sup>-century K\u0151szeg Synagogue on V\u00e1rk\u00f6r street, followed by the welcome speech by B\u00e9la B\u00e1sthy, Mayor of K\u0151szeg and musical performance by Zolt\u00e1n Mizsei, musician and researcher at iASK, Ern\u0151 Sebesty\u00e9n, violinist, and a speech by Imre S\u00f6ptei, archivist and researcher at iASK. The event will continue with a round table discussion titled The past, present and future of synagogues in Hungary<\/em> moderated by Attila P\u00f3k, historian and researcher at iASK. Participants include Ruth Ellen Gruber from the Jewish Heritage Europe Foundation, Johannes Reiss, the Director of the Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt, M\u00f3nika M\u00e1tay, Historian and permanent research fellow at iASK, Ferenc Olti, President of the Jewish House of Excellence Foundation and Edit Sz\u00e1nt\u00f3n\u00e9 Bal\u00e1zs, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Jewish Studies Research Group of iASK. At 6 pm on the premises of the Festetics Palace (K\u0151szeg, Chernel street 10.), a musical event Melodies of the Monarchy<\/em> with Ern\u0151 Sebesty\u00e9n (violin) and Ferenc Bogn\u00e1r (piano) will conclude the day.<\/p>\n

The Jewish Memory Places of K\u0151szeg<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On August 29th<\/sup>, iASK will organise guided visits to the K\u0151szeg Synagogue. Tours led by members of the iASK Jewish Studies Research Group will run every hour between 10 am and 2 pm. From 2 pm, M\u00f3nika M\u00e1tay, historian and researcher at iASK and Katalin G\u00fcrtler, the archaeologist will organise a visit to the Jewish cemetery in K\u0151szeg. At 4:30 pm, Attila P\u00f3k and Andr\u00e1s Nagy will present Edit Sz\u00e1nt\u00f3n\u00e9 Bal\u00e1zs\u2019s books: In the footsteps of Pannonian values, The Jewish community of K\u00f6rmend<\/em>, and A Modern Conservative Rabbi B\u00e9la Bernstein <\/em>with the participation of Attila Katona, historian and researcher at iASK along with the presentation of Istv\u00e1n Balogh\u2019s work in progress: The Jewish cemetery of K\u0151szeg<\/em>. The event series will finish with a lecture on \u201cThe spaces of Jewish life\u201d by Edit Sz\u00e1nt\u00f3n\u00e9 Bal\u00e1zs, Senior Researcher and the Head of the Jewish Studies Research Group of iASK.<\/p>\n

The Restoration Journey: Reviving the K\u0151szeg Synagogue<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The restoration of an astoundingly beautiful Synagogue in K\u0151szeg started in 2020. This long-abandoned 19th<\/sup> century property has been owned by the state since 2016 which financed the renovation carried out by VM Construction F\u0151v\u00e1llalkoz\u00f3 Kft within the framework of the Kraft<\/a> program of iASK<\/a> institute that has a track record of preserving Jewish heritage. Kraft is a regional development program<\/a>\u00a0that includes economic, municipal, and academic actors that work together for the development of small and medium-sized cities. The K\u0151szeg-based Institute for Advanced Studies (iASK) coordinates activities in its\u00a0Kraft centre<\/a>. The architectural plan was created in October 2020 by the firm Tripartitum \u00c9p\u00edt\u00e9sz M\u0171hely Kft, and the restoration of the Synagogue was completed in 2021. This year, the renovation and redesign of the entire complex, including the rabbi\u2019s house, courtyard, garden and fence are completed. The exhibition A success story in K\u0151szeg: the Schey family<\/em> will mark the first step in reviving the K\u0151szeg Synagogue to host cultural events and religious services in the future.<\/p>\n
