[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On 19th of December, flames of Hanukkah were lit in Jurisics Square in K\u0151szeg. The event, organised by the Institute of Advanced Studies and the United Hungarian Israelite Congregation (EMIH), was greeted by the President of the EMIH, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Gy\u0151rfi, and the Mayor of K\u0151szeg, B\u00e9la B\u00e1sthy. Andor Nagy, Hungary’s Ambassador to Vienna and L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Majth\u00e9nyi, President of the Vas County Assembly, also participated in the candle-lighting ceremony.<\/p>\n

After singing the song “Sz\u00f3l a kakas m\u00e1r…”, the participants could taste kosher flodni, beans, bolesta and Hanukkah doughnuts on the square.<\/p>\n

After the ceremony, violinist Ern\u0151 Sebesty\u00e9n, cellist Gy\u00f6rgy \u00c9der and pianist Ferenc Bogn\u00e1r performed works by Fritz Kreisler in the renovated Synagogue.<\/p>\n

The celebration of Hanukkah commemorates a heroic story that took place more than two thousand years ago: the Jews\u2019 fight for freedom from Greek domination. The struggle ended in victory for the Maccabees, but what we call a miracle was yet to come. The Jews found in the recaptured sanctuary only enough pure oil for one day, which miraculously illuminated the Temple in Jerusalem for eight days. By the light of the candles placed in the hanukiah, we have celebrated these eight days of Hanukkah ever since.<\/em><\/p>\n
