Curriculum Vitae

Marco Zoppi works as research assistant at the University of Bologna, Department of Political and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Histories and Dynamics of Globalization from Roskilde University (Denmark), with a thesis titled “Horizons of security. State and extended family: the Somali safety net in Scandinavia” (2017). His doctoral work has analysed, through an interdisciplinary approach, the process of integration of the Somali diaspora in Scandinavian countries from the specific point of view of welfare and social security.

He is currently coordinating the international research project titled: “Territorial and Urban Potentials Connected to Migration and Refugee Flows”. The project is financed by ESPON and led by the University of Bologna and targets the Adriatic-Ionian and Danube macro-regions, where it investigates the impact of contemporary mixed migration flows as well as the socio-economic challenges faced by the territories in the area, with the scope of identifying opportunities for growth. The collected evidence suggests that multifaceted human mobility is a defining attribute, and also a vital component for the socio-economic performance of the macro-regions; therefore, the project recommends a shift from emergency management to long-term planning for integration.

Marco Zoppi’s main interests include migration dynamics, European Union integration, Euro-African relations, and welfare systems, on which he has published several journal articles, book chapters and online posts. He is also co-founder of transencountersblog.wordpress.com, a blog that focuses on academic research in the broad theme of migration.
