Amarjot Johal

Curriculum Vitae

Am Johal is Director of Simon Fraser University’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement. He previously served as co-chair of the Impact on Communities Coalition, a 2010 Olympic watchdog group, on the board of the Vancity Community Foundation, the partnerships committee of the Vancouver Foundation and is currently an associate with SFU’s Centre for Dialogue and SFU’s Institute for the Humanities. He has served on the Management Advisory Committee of the 312 Main Street project, an international center for social innovation based in Vancouver. He is the co-founder of UBC’s Humanities 101 program. He previously worked with the Vancouver Agreement, a tripartite agreement involving all three levels of government, the provincial health authority and the Vancouver Police Department, to coordinate social and economic development initiatives in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside neighbourhood and was an advisor to two provincial Cabinet Ministers. He has a graduate degree in International Economic Relations from the Institute for Social and European Studies in Hungary and a doctorate in media philosophy from the European Graduate School. He is the author of Ecological Metapolitics: Badiou and the Anthropocene (Atropos Press, 2015) and co-author with Matt Hern and contributor Joe Sacco on ‘Global Warming and the Sweetness of Life: A Tar Sands Tale’ (MIT Press, 2018).
